Navigating to Bristol Harbor from Rhode Island Sound via Narragansett Bay
Enter the southern portion of Narragansett Bay with Beavertail Point (Jamestown / Conanicut Island) to your West and Breton Point (Newport) to your East. You have a clear shot up the East Passage of Narragansett Bay with a clearly marked shipping channel you can follow. Leave Rose Island to the East and proceed under the Newport Bridge. Navigate via the channel and leave Prudence Island to your West. Follow the Buoys and proceed into the channel entering Bristol via the west side of Hog Island. Much of Bristol Harbor is spotted with moorings, but a path called the "fairway" is left open along the western shore, leading up to Bristol Yacht Club. GPS Coordinates 41 40.57N / 071 17.25E should put you in the mooring field just off the Bristol YC dock. Bristol YC monitors VHF Channel 68.
To help those arriving by sea, a preplanned safe navigation route from the Newport entrance in Rhode Island Sound via the shipping channel up Narragansett Bay to Bristol Yacht Club is provided. This was created using the free Maptech Offshore Navigator Lite software with the Maptech Chart (Narragansett Bay RI-MA). The route file was exported with waypoint GPS coordinates.
